Hong Kong-born Joel Lai began DJing in the territory's handful of nightclubs and private parties 15 years ago. At that time his tools were limited -- no vinyl, only cassette tapes. "I just used a pencil -- make it slower, make it faster." Times have changed. The dance culture that spawned a musical explosion in London has penetrated deep into Hong Kong and 31-year old Joel Lai has shaped this sound to give the former colony one of the most intense and biggest dance scenes in Asia.
As Paul Oakenfold said at the time of the Unity party to mark Hong Kong's handover to Chinese sovereignty in 1997, "Joel Lai can hold his own with the European DJs"†. He has played alongside the biggest names in the industry and is increasingly on tour across Asia and Europe in major venues such as the Ministry of Sound (Move, Main Room, June 11) The End, Heaven, Lulu in Germany (August 1999), Singapore's Zouk and Tokyo's Loop - to name a few.
Voted Hong Kong's NO#1 DJ by the local music press (Absolute magazine), Joel Lai is well known for drawing large crowds into clubs in Hong Kong by his name alone. In Hong Kong, many clubbers often walk away from some of the bigger nights wondering if Joel's seamless and inspired set had outgunned the Big Names. Not just a few sweating faces have beamed through the twists of flashing lights to extol the power of the sounds, and then peered over to the booth and discovered Joel Lai commanding the music rather than the featured DJ.
He is best known for a sound that mixes deep house and a dark, cutting-edge progressive house, often with tribal elements. But he also built a reputation for playing a funky and chunky U.S.-style garage while resident for nine years at Club 1997, turning that venue into the hottest spot in Hong Kong during that time.
Aside from working on his music and his productions, Joel is busy in Hong Kong running his own record distribution company and organizing major parties with partner Simon Blackjack, under the name Way Out East- most recently Paul van Dyk, Nick Warren, John Digweed and Qattara. He views the latter job as a crucial part of helping develop the Hong Kong music scene.
